The Protego Foundation is back with another news roundup! These news stories feature the best animal news today, good animal news, new vegan products, and animal rights news. Read on to discover May 2026 good animal news.

In this month’s roundup, we have a singer who pledged funds to animal rights organizations, a ban on advertising meat and fossil fuels, a new vegan mac and cheese, a ‘lost’ bird that was photographed for the first time in 100 years, and so much more!

Royal Ballet to No Longer Use Live Animals on Stage

The Royal Ballet and Opera will no longer use live animals on stage, signaling the end of the use of white Shetland ponies in La Fille mal gardée and live birds in The Two Pigeons. The theatre said it was “committed to no longer working with live animals in its productions.” A wooden automata will replace the pony, marking some positive vegan news.

Animal rights organizations have long protested the use of live animals on stage in Britain. When Harry Potter and the Cursed Child first debuted on the West End, live owls were used in the first few shows before producers removed them.

The Protego Foundation’s campaign, Defend the Dire Wolves, is still working to end the use of animals as photo props at live events such as fan conventions. Click here to sign the petition and make your voice heard!

Amsterdam Bans Advertising of Meat and Fossil Fuels in Public

Since May 1, advertisements featuring burgers, gas cars, and airlines have been removed from public billboards, tram stops, and metro stations in Amsterdam. The ban comes after initiatives from the political parties GreenLeft and Party for the Animals.

The ban also includes ads for cruises, far away holiday destinations, and animal products like beef, pork, chicken, and fish, marking more good animal news for this month. The move aims to align the capital city with the goals of becoming carbon neutral and for locals to halve their meat consumption, both by the year 2050.

Bill Banning Traveling Animal Acts from Using Wild Animals Heads to Governor Pritzker’s Desk

In good animal rights news, a bill that would restrict traveling animal acts from using wild animals in their shows is now heading to the Illinois governor’s desk for final approval. The bill, House Bill 4255, passed the full Senate.

State Senator Linda Holmes (D-Aurora) is leading the legislation to add specific breeds to the ‘banned species’ list as part of the bill. This includes cougars, jaguars, leopards, lions, tigers, non-human primates, bears, and elephants. The ban would also include hybrids of any of the listed animals.

Holmes stated, “I passed legislation in 2017 to ban the use of elephants in circuses and other traveling exhibitions that cannot provide the animals adequate living conditions, and we’ve added more species to the ban over the years. These animals spend most of their lives in cramped, filthy cages under severe and chronic stress. It is cruel and heartbreaking to witness.”

The Protego Foundation’s Defying Captivity campaign aims to educate the public about the suffering animals endure while kept in captive environments like circuses. Commit to abstaining from animal entertainment by clicking here to sign the pledge!

Moby Pledges Coachella Profits to Animal Rights Organizations

Moby announced that he is donating 100% of his festival profits from Coachella 2026 to four animal rights organizations.

The producer announced on Instagram in April, “Music is what i love, but working on animal rights is my life's work. To that end i'll be giving 100% of my profits from my @coachella shows to @physicianscommittee @mercyforanimals @thehumaneleague @directactioneverywhere. My simple belief that every sentient being is entitled to live their life according to their will.”

Three Bills Threatening Mexican Wolves Fail in Arizona

Early this year, Arizona Rep. Lupe Diaz introduced three bills that failed to move forward this season, in a win for animal rights.

State lawmakers passed HB 2787, which would have stopped state agencies from cooperating with the Mexican Wolf Reintroduction Program under the Endangered Species Act. But Gov. Katie Hobbs vetoed it, saying, “This Program is an important wildlife management effort, and Arizona should remain positioned to engage in it thoughtfully and effectively.”

The two other bills are HB 2159 and HB 2160. The former “would have required the Arizona Game and Fish Department to issue permits to landowners for killing Mexican wolves on private land or lands leased for grazing and allow the agency to pay bounties for the humane and non-lethal trapping of wolves and provide sport hunting opportunities in accordance with AZGFD rules.”

The latter “would have (very prematurely) created a Mexican Wolf Management Plan Development Committee to develop a management plan for Mexican wolves when they are delisted.”

According to In Defense of Animals, there are currently just over 300 Mexican grey wolves left in the wild today.

New Taco Mac and Cheese from Daiya Now at Walmart

In vegan food news, as we reported in our March 2026 World Animal News Roundup, Daiya Foods was getting ready to launch a new taco-flavored vegan mac and cheese. The new product can now be found at Walmart. The macaroni is even shaped like tacos!

EU to Ban Brazilian Meat Imports

The EU has proposed a ban on meat imported from Brazil from September of 2026. The Commission released a list of countries that complied with EU restrictions on the use of antimicrobials in animals. Under the rules, substances that promote growth or increase production in livestock and other food-producing animals are banned.

“The Commission confirms that Brazil is not included in the list, meaning that it can no longer export to the EU commodities (both food producing live animals and derived products) such as bovine, equine, poultry, eggs, aquaculture, honey and casings, with effect as from 3 September 2026,” said Eva Hrncirova, the Commission’s spokesperson for health, according to Euractiv.

‘Lost’ Bird Photographed After 100 Years

A rare Leyte bleeding-heart dove (Gallicolumba crinigera leytensis) was photographed in the Leyte Sab-a Basin Peatland (LSBP) Hydrological Unit, with the last recorded sighting of the bird being in 1918. This piece of good animal news excited many.

Previously thought to be a subspecies of the Mindanao bleeding-heart, the Leyte bleeding heart dove is a ground-dwelling dove who calls the forest their home. They have a red patch on their chest, and their behavior is not very well-documented.

The photograph was taken by Marvin Jay Sarmiento and his team during biodiversity monitoring activities under the LUYON project. The four-year project is co-managed by the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) and the Visayas State University – Alangalang, LUYON to encourage peatland restoration.

Germany Formally Includes Alt-Proteins in High-Tech Agenda

The government of Germany published its new High-Tech Agenda which includes a roadmap for cell cultivation and advanced precision fermentation by 2027. The focus is on pushing alternative protein innovation and is an exciting plant-based news story rounding off this month’s roundup.

The plan was presented on May 20, 2026 by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space.

The Vegconomist reports, “According to a GFI Europe analysis published alongside the roadmap, Germany invested €79 million in alternative protein research and innovation between 2020 and 2025, less than €1 per capita, placing it behind the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and a number of Scandinavian countries.”

The analysis found that around four-fifths of Germany’s public funding in the space went to plant-based proteins and one-fifth went to biotechnologically produced foods like cultivated meat and precision fermentation ingredients.
