Harry Potter fans have patiently waited, but it’s been long enough. It’s time for vegan Butterbeer to be sold at all Wizarding World of Harry Potter lands within the Universal theme parks.

After The Protego Foundation campaigned to make Butterbeer dairy-free and vegan, our supporters petitioned, successfully convincing Warner Bros. to make the compassionate decision to begin selling a dairy-free Butterbeer option.

Bottled Butterbeer is now available in the UK at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour, the Harry Potter Photographic Exhibition, the Harry Potter Shop at Platform 9 ¾, the Harry Potter shops in the Gatwick and Heathrow airports, and online. The bottles are also available in the US at Harry Potter New York.

Butterbeer on draft is available without the dairy topping at both the Warner Bros. Studio Tour in London and Harry Potter New York, making the drink vegan. And as of March 2nd, 2023, Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood have introduced a dairy-free Butterbeer topping. Previously, the drink was not allowed to be sold at the parks without the original dairy-based topping. This is great progress!

Now, we are urging Universal Parks and Resorts to offer the fully vegan version of Butterbeer, including the vegan topping, at Universal Studios Japan and Universal Beijing Resort. We are also urging Warner Bros. to introduce the vegan topping at Harry Potter New York and the Warner Bros. Studio Tour in London, which would give fans all over the world the opportunity to enjoy vegan Butterbeer.

With everything that has recently happened within the theme park industry, we want to ensure that bringing vegan Butterbeer to Universal parks around the world remains a top priority for Universal. Reasons why offering a vegan version of Butterbeer is important include:

Animal Welfare: Mother cows only produce milk during and after pregnancy for their babies, just like human moms. On commercial dairy farms, they are impregnated once a year and are held in cramped, crowded, filthy barns or lots. They are subjected to cruel industry-standard practices, such as dehorning, having their calves taken away hours after being born, and being sent to slaughter after their milk production wanes.

Health: Many people, especially children, suffer from dairy allergies or lactose intolerance. Approximately 65% of the human population has a reduced ability to digest lactose. No one wants to feel the uncomfortable effects of dairy while trying to enjoy their favorite Wizarding World treats!

Environment: It takes about 12 times as much water to produce dairy milk as it does to produce almond milk and over 30 times as much water as soy. Studies estimate that dairy emits around three times more greenhouse gasses than plant-based milks. The production of plant milk requires smaller land areas and the trees absorb carbon emissions rather than producing more.

People with dairy allergies and those who choose to abstain from dairy due to animal welfare concerns deserve to experience everything that The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has to offer, including the most popular themed drink offering.

By offering vegan Butterbeer at all Wizarding World of Harry Potter locations, Universal will see a rise in sales and guest satisfaction. Universal will be regarded as a better ally to the environment, animals, and all guests.
