Book Club -

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's / Sorcerer's Stone
Picture

Highlights from This Session:

Picture
  • Regardless of their “purpose” (a very human-centered way of thinking), animals are seen and used all throughout the book.
  • The way we use language in the Muggle world and how that can affect the way we perceive and “place” animals. For example, using “it” instead of “they” when referring to a single animal.
  • What creatures might see if they looked in the Mirror of Erised. Would Hedwig see herself spending time with Harry, or would she see herself liberated, flying above the trees, without a single letter to deliver? Would she see herself with her lost family, as Harry did?
  • Some of the problematic recurring themes in the books, including fat-shaming and references to pigs.
  • How problematic messaging might have been different had the books been written now, versus 20 years ago, but how things might not have changed as much for animals.

This is a FREE event! As a fully volunteer-run nonprofit, we rely on your generous donations. If you’d like to

support The Protego Foundation Book Club with a donation, let us know which book is your favorite
with a donation of that amount! Is it 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7?
