Dining with the Dursleys and Death |
Credit: From My Bowl | 1. Veggie and "Chicken" Noodle Soup If food truly is love, the meals that Harry is served at the Dursley’s speak volumes. At the beginning of the book, Harry, under “house arrest” in his room, is served a bowl of stone-cold soup full of soggy vegetables. Even Hedwig refuses to touch a morsel of that sorry can of soup. This vegetable and vegan chicken noodle soup isn’t the same recipe that Harry is served that fateful night at Privet Drive. And thank Godric Gryffindor for that! This recipe is a heartier, more wholesome take on that salty, soggy, and unappetizing mess of a meal. Soy curls serve as a protein-packed vegan answer to chunks of “chicken,” and fresh thyme, parsley, and smoked paprika bring warm and cozy, nostalgic flavoring to the broth. If you want it to be as canon as possible, leave out the noodles and the soy chicken, and just stick to the veggies and vegan chicken-style broth! |
Credit: Loving It Vegan | 2. Cheese Cheese appears quite a bit in Chamber of Secrets and other Potter books. Harry eats a cold plate of cheese at the Dursley’s and is faced with a platter of moldy cheese at the banquet table at Nearly Headless Nick’s Death Day Party. Cheddar is one of the most popular varieties of cheese in Scotland. Lucky for you, dear magical friends, this is also one of the easiest types of cheese to make vegan! But if you’d rather not panic over bowls of cashews and fight with swaths of cheesecloth, you could pop your wand in your back pocket (mind those buttocks of yours though!) and simply head out to your local grocery or supermarket and pick up a ready-made vegan cheese from the coolers. |
Brands like Miyoko’s Creamery’s Smoked Farmhouse vegan cheese wheel, Follow Your Heart’s Gourmet Cheddar, and Vio Life’s Just Like Cheddar slices are all outstanding plant-based substitutes. These cheeses get rave reviews for how creamy, savory, and full-bodied they are. And they don’t contribute any cruelty towards cows!
Credit: The Pesky Vegan | 3. Haggis It’s no surprise that Scotland’s national dish has a place on the banquet table for Nearly Headless Nick’s Death Day party. Haggis is a type of sausage traditionally made from sheep’s livers, lungs, and hearts along with oats, spices, and kidney fat from cows (also known as suet). This version, from a real Scottish food blogger, ditches the slaughtered animal parts and uses plant-based proteins in their place. Lentils (Harry and his friends are already surrounded by enough death in the dungeon bash, so why add to it?!), portobello mushrooms, steel-cut oats, sunflower seeds, and marmite recreate the meaty flavor and texture that’s so distinctive of haggis. For the most authentic haggis dish, and something you would most definitely find on Madam Rosemerta’s menu at the Three Broomsticks, serve these vegan meatless sausages with mashed potatoes, turnips, cabbage greens, and a drizzle of whisky cream sauce. |
Breakfast at the Burrow
Credit: The Edgy Veg | 4. Mrs. Weasley’s Vegan British Fry-Up When Harry arrives at the Burrow after his thrilling midnight escape from Privet Drive with his best friend Ron and the troublemaking Weasley twins, Fred and George, food is the last thing on his mind. But, for the Weasley family matriarch, Molly Weasley, a witch known for her culinary prowess, food is an expression of the love she feels towards her family. Even though she’s less than pleased with her three sons’ foolhardy escapades, she’s eager to welcome young Harry into her cozy home. So, of course, she conjures up a magical breakfast consisting of fried eggs, sausages, fresh bread, and creamy butter. In other words, it’s a typical British fry-up! This veganized version recreates the traditional meat-heavy English breakfast but with plant-based proteins instead. Featuring fried tomatoes, JUST egg, baked beans, and vegan sausage and bacon, this breakfast isn’t for the faint of heart… the Weasleys are all Gryffindors after all…! |
Dinner in the Great Hall
Credit: Veganosity | 5. Monte Cristo (Ham and Cheese Sandwiches) Ok, so, this isn’t exactly a meal Harry and Ron eat in the Great Hall. After all, the pair miss the annual sorting ceremony after they crash the flying Ford Anglia into the Whomping Willow. After being scolded by Filch and Professor Snape about their little stunt, the duo is threatened with expulsion . . . until their head of house, Professor McGonagall, steps in. The firm but fair Transfiguration teacher doesn’t boot the young Gryffindors out of Hogwarts, but instead assigns them detention and conjures up a plate of sandwiches left over from the welcome feast in the Great Hall. In the book, they’re described as chicken and ham sandwiches. We imagine the ham sandwiches would be a lot like a Monte Cristo: a fried ham and cheese sandwich. These crispy sandwiches are a bit like French toast crossed with a grilled cheese, and would for sure be a staple in the Great Hall. This recipe uses JUST Egg (a vegan liquid egg substitute), hearty sourdough bread, thinly sliced plant-based ham, and sharp vegan cheddar cheese to achieve the crispy, crunchy, melty, comfort food. |
Sweet Bites and Desserts
Credit: The Vegan 8 | 6. Hot Chocolate This cozy cocoa-y drink appears many times in Chamber of Secrets (and in later Harry Potter books for that matter). The golden trio and even Hogwarts Headmaster, Dumbledore himself, all have a deep love for this classic wintery drink. Scotland winters are harsh, and the castle is known for getting bitterly cold and drafty, so clutching steaming mugs of hot chocolate is kind of a given! Many hot chocolate recipes use cow’s milk, dried milk powder, heavy cream, or melted milk chocolate to achieve the richest, smoothest texture. These ingredients are SO easy to substitute with vegan alternatives. This recipe is a perfect example of decadent vegan hot chocolate! Canned coconut milk is even creamier and richer than cow’s milk. Unsweetened, plain cocoa powder and melted vegan chocolate chips (or chunks) are the easiest swaps for dairy-based chocolate and are probably already in your pantry! If you’re feeling extra fancy, you could add a pinch of ground coffee or espresso to enhance the chocolate flavor and top your own steaming mug of hot chocolate with your favorite non-dairy whipped topping. |
Credit: One Green Planet | 7. Mrs. Weasley’s Plum Cake Nothing screams, “Christmas at Hogwarts!” quite like this festive cake. Baked with fresh plums and a hint of almond and dusted with powdered sugar, this cheerful looking cake is most definitely one of Mrs. Weasley’s go-to winter desserts. Although this cake may be German of origin, and Mrs. Weasley is about as Irish as they get, tasty confections like cake cross nationality boundaries! Try adding some fresh orange zest and warming spices like cinnamon to make this cake a little more Christmassy, just like the one Harry receives in his Christmas care package from Mrs. Weasley on Christmas morning in the Gryffindor tower common room. Your favorite non-dairy milk, ground flaxseeds, and apple cider vinegar stand in for the cow’s milk, eggs, and traditional buttermilk that are typically used in plum cakes. |
If Mrs. Weasley, who is such a devoted mother to her children, knew about how mother cows are actively separated from their newborn calves and how newly hatched, “useless” male chicks are killed, she wouldn’t want to support the cruel egg and dairy industries.
Credit: A Virtual Vegan | 8. Christmas Pudding If the name didn’t tip you off, this fruity, boozy dessert is often served for dessert after a hearty Christmas meal in the UK. So, unsurprisingly, it has a starring role in the Hogwarts Christmas feast. This authentic British recipe uses deep and robust ingredients like brandy and blackstrap molasses to give this cake its signature, strong taste. Dried fruits and fresh orange zest bring a sweet and tart fruitiness to this thick, sticky pudding, while a big pinch of allspice brings the aromatic warm and cozy wintery spice to this sweet treat. You could serve this with vegan brandy butter, your favorite non-dairy whipped cream topping, or eggnog. If you’re feeling particularly showy (a la Gilderoy Lockhart), you could drizzle this pudding with warm brandy and cast Incendio (or use a Muggle match) to create a flaming pudding! |
Magical Drinks
Credit: The Plant Philosophy | 9. Polyjuice Potion (Green Smoothie) Polyjuice Potion is hardly appetizing. Especially when it contains the essence of Crabbe and Goyle, Draco’s foul cronies. Thankfully THIS take on Polyjuice Potion doesn’t require the hair or fingernail clippings of your sworn enemies. A particularly ingenious recipe developer (we wouldn’t be surprised if she was a proud Ravenclaw) reimagined this iconic potion as a green smoothie! All you need is a Muggle blender, some frozen bananas, fresh kale, your favorite non-dairy milk, and a few other pantry-friendly ingredients to brew up this bright green, energizing smoothie! It won’t turn you into anyone else, but with zingy ginger and a hint of cacao, turmeric, and spirulina, it’s sure to put some pep in your step! |
Credit: Willamette Transplant | 10. Iced Pumpkin Juice Iced Pumpkin Juice is one of the wizarding world’s favorite magical beverages! Behind the Three Broomsticks’ signature brew (butterbeer, of course!) pumpkin juice is the most popular drink at Hogwarts and in larger Great Britain. Pumpkin juice is a Hogwarts Express staple, a regular at feasts in the Great Hall, and a go-to drink for many young witches and wizards. When the Gryffindor Quidditch team surprises an injured Harry in the Hospital Wing with iced pumpkin juice, it becomes pretty apparent that this scrumptious, squashy drink is readily available at the castle. It’s also riddikulusly easy to make yourself! This recipe combines real pureed pumpkin with apple cider, pumpkin pie spice, brown sugar, and maple syrup to make this delightfully delicious drink! |
