J.K. Rowling and the Problem with Fur

J.K. Rowling was recently spotted while on a trip wearing a £900, fur-lined, feather-filled Canada Goose jacket. The sheer cruelty of Canada Goose garments is not only unfathomable but it’s also entirely unnecessary.

Companies that continue to use real fur and down feathers commit atrociously abusive acts on animals. From snapping coyotes’ legs in steel-jawed traps, to violently ripping the feathers out of fully-conscious geese and ducks until their skin is left raw and bloody, these companies perpetuate needless cruelty.
With so many animal-free alternatives on the market today, there’s no reason to buy into the Canada Goose jacket cruelty. Using polyester, nylon, cotton, and other plant-based or synthetic materials with special insulation technology, these often eco-friendly jackets can combat all kinds of weather and are especially effective in banishing the winter chill.

Whether you’re a globe-trotting magizoologist, Slytherin quidditch aficionado, or just a stay-at-home, crazy Kneazle or Crup lady, there are vegan, cruelty-free jackets for all your needs. Here are our top picks:

1. Save The Duck Women's GIGA Quilted Jacket

Comes in sizes 0 - 4XL. This quilted puffer jacket is made from lightweight nylon that protects you from the elements, keeping you warm at the coldest temperatures (like walking to Hogsmeade at the height of winter!). Save The Duck’s vegan jackets also keep humidity at bay and have fast-drying technology. Perfect to wear while strolling the misty, wet, Hogwarts grounds in the Scottish Highlands! We recommend the Tango Red for bold and daring Gryffindors!

2. Le Chateau Faux Leather Notch Collar Aviator Jacket

Looking to channel some Sirius Black energy? This black, faux-leather aviator jacket will have you rocking the Marauder’s edgy style in no time. Fashioned from vegan leather (polyurethane) this sleek, asymmetrically-cut jacket is perfect for late-night joy rides on flying motorcycles or grabbing a pint at The Leaky Cauldron with your mates.

3. Patagonia Women’s Nano Puff Vest in Pineapple

Heading into the Forbidden Forest to sketch and take Magizoologist-worthy notes on the forest’s Unicorn and Thestral inhabitants? Don this wind-proof, water-resistant, insulated vest. Instead of using down feathers, this Patagonia vest uses 100% post-consumer recycled polyester and a special eco-technology to give wearers unparalleled warmth from cold and wintery elements. Layer this bright, cheerful, yellow vest over a cozy black sweater to express your Hufflepuff pride.

4. Noize Rydel Midweight Puffer

In search of the elusive Crumple-Horned Snorkack? This vibrant, velvet, fuschia puffer jacket would be right at home in Luna Lovegood’s wardrobe. Fittingly for the patron witch of veganism, this puffer jacket is cruelty-free and doesn’t contain any animal skin, hair, or feathers. Instead, it’s fashioned from recycled muggle water bottles! Pillowy soft and fluffy, this wind-proof, water-resistant jacket can keep you warm in temperatures as low as -15°C and 5°F.

5. Frank and Oak The Skyline Packable Puffer

In Ravenclaw worthy royal blue, this quilted puffer jacket from Frank and Oak is wonderful for long hikes in The Forest of Dean over the winter holidays. Frank and Oak is a company that entirely eschews cruel animal products for innovative Smart Layer “Thinsulate” technology. Made from 100% recycled polyester, this puffer jacket is water-repellent and keeps you snug and toasty. And bonus: it can be folded into a small, velcroed pouch!

6. Wuxly Lion Mid-Weight Jacket in Maple Red

Gryffindors with Gringott’s vaults of galleons to burn would do well to treat themselves to this vegan-certified, super-cozy, mid-weight jacket. Quilted recycled polyester, nylon, and powder fill insulation make this a winter must-have for outdoorsy Gryffindors on the prowl for adventure. Its breathable, fitted, and water-resistant features give cruel, feather down coats a run for their Knuts, Sickles, and Galleons.

7. The North Face Men’s Thermoball Eco Jacket

This vegan, eco-conscious, light-weight puffer jacket comes in 12 colors and sizes XS - 3XL. Made from recycled nylon and polyester, this water-repellent, insulated, packable jacket combines the best of function and fashion. We can imagine Charlie Weasley zipping up in the show-stopping Flare Orange jacket when the brutally cold winters strike his dragon sanctuary in Romania!

8. Save The Duck Men’s Copy Winter Hooded Parka

All of Save The Duck’s clothing is 100% animal-free and sustainably sourced. This cruelty-free, environmentally-friendly hooded parka is crafted from a cozy cotton-polyester blend. The faux-fur-lined hood makes this parka extra warm and perfect to throw on after a grueling winter quidditch practice on Hogwarts’ snowy pitch. The olive green shade is a subtle way for Slytherins to flaunt their house allegiance!

Just as we wouldn’t harm Golden Snidgets for their feathers or Demiguises for their silky fur, we can’t abide by muggle clothing companies who continue to cruelly abuse animals to use their feathers and fur in making coats. These eight plant-based or synthetic jackets are some of the best alternatives to harmful, animal-derived clothing.

Do you have a favorite vegan, cruelty-free jacket? Let us know on our Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook! We’d love to see your magical and kind fashion choices!
