Three Cheers For Vegan Butterbeer!

The day is finally here, and it’s as epic as when we received our Hogwarts acceptance letters! 

Vegan Butterbeer has arrived in the Muggle world! 

Can you hear all the creature-loving characters (we’re looking at you Newt Scamander, Luna Lovegood, and Hermione Granger!) cheering with us? ‘Cuz we can! 

At The Protego Foundation, we’ve made no secret about urging Warner Bros. and Universal Studios’ Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme parks in Hollywood, Orlando, and Japan, to veganize their Butterbeer recipes. 

In 2018 we launched our Accio Vegan Butterbeer campaign and created a petition that was signed by over 7,500 Potterheads. 

Now, two years later, as of September 10, 2020, we’re SO proud to announce that your incredible support of our campaign has paid off. So much so that we have a Gringotts vault-sized vegan victory to share with you…

Warner Bros. Studio Tour in London has just announced that they’re selling dairy-free and vegan  bottled  Butterbeer!  

Now visitors to the famous Leavesden studios can indulge in the Wizarding World’s favorite drink! The (muggle) world’s first officially licensed bottled Butterbeer is dairy-free, gluten-free, and vegan! 

“We are so thankful to Warner Bros. and everyone else involved for creating this vegan Butterbeer option for Potter fans who choose to skip the dairy for health, ethical, or environmental reasons,” says Tylor Starr, President and co-founder of The Protego Foundation. “Mother cows and Wizarding World enthusiasts alike can now say ‘cheers’ to a dairy-free Butterbeer that doesn’t contribute to the cruel separation of baby cows and their mom.”

Currently, the Three Broomsticks favorite is available for purchase at the Platform Nine and Three Quarters shop (and website) in Kings Cross, London, and at the official Warner Bros. Studio Tour London. 

Prior to this incredible news, Butterbeer recipes have notoriously included cow’s milk in the frothy whipped topping and in the soda base in the hot version of the drink.

The far-reaching negative implications of using dairy can’t be stressed enough.

In the muggle world, cows in the dairy industry are subjected to unfathomable cruelty. These deeply feeling, intelligent, and sensitive cows are kept in cramped and filthy conditions and are subject to violent mutilations like dehorning and tail docking, and can come down with chronic mastitis and painful bacterial infections in their udders. And, perhaps most heartbreakingly, female cows, who are known for forging strong, emotional connections with their children and herds, are forcibly impregnated and have their calves stolen from them just hours after they’re born.  

Now, with this new vegan Butterbeer on the market, the 9 million cows in the dark and deadly dairy US industry are part of this sweet victory as well! 

We’ve got our wands crossed that this official vegan Butterbeer will make its way stateside, so American vegans, creature-lovers, and magizoologists who visit the Wizarding World theme parks can join in on the magical, vegan, Potterish fun! ​
