HELP FIND AND PROTECT CHIMPS
When Newt Scamander came to New York, he had to find and rescue the magical creatures who escaped from his suitcase-sanctuary before they were hurt by humans—both magic and no-maj. One of the beasts Newt had to find was his apelike Demiguise companion, Dougal. The Protego Foundation’s “Find Dougal” campaign highlights the plight that chimpanzees face at the hands of humans. The Protego Foundation is working to educate the Wizarding World fandom on how they can use Newt’s rescue of Dougal to help chimpanzees in our world. Through a partnership with Accio! Subscription Box and Save the Chimps, a sanctuary in Florida that provides lifetime care to chimpanzees from research laboratories, the entertainment industry, and the pet trade, Protego is looking to support the rescue of chimps in the US.

Did you know that in the USA alone, there are over 600 chimpanzees living in research laboratories, entertainment, and the pet trade? In 2015, the US Fish & Wildlife Service closed a loophole that allowed invasive testing and the purchase of chimpanzees for private use, despite their endangered status. While this was incredible progress for chimpanzees, many still await their peaceful and dignified retirement to reputable sanctuaries. In Africa, wild chimpanzees are often hunted for bushmeat, the capture of infants for trade, and because they are seen as a “pest” species. With only about 170,000 left in the wild, compared to over one million at the turn of the century, this endangered species needs our help.
Chimps are our closest living relatives, sharing as much as 98.6% of our DNA. They are intelligent, sentient animals who feel pain and suffering just like you and me. |

Save the Chimps provides lifelong care to nearly 250 chimpanzees, all retired from research laboratories, the entertainment industry, and the pet trade. The chimpanzees live in large family groups on 12 separate 3- to 5-acre island habitats, each complete with grass, trees, hills, climbing platforms, swings, hammocks, and various enrichment activities to keep the chimps mentally and physically active. Save the Chimps provides the nutritious meals, clean enclosures, innovative enrichment, exceptional veterinary care, and social companionship the chimpanzees need to live out a peaceful and dignified retirement. We are committed to providing lifelong sanctuary to even more chimpanzees in need and actively collaborate to bring chimps to sanctuary from around the country. Chimpanzees can live up to fifty years or more, making their lifelong care a long-term commitment. Therefore, we additionally provide the administrative and development infrastructure that provides critical sustainability for the long-term care of the chimpanzees.
