Vegan Thanksgiving: Celebrate ThanksLiving With These Magical Recipes

Keep turkeys off your table and whip up a veritable Hogwarts feast this Thanksgiving, or, as we like to say, ThanksLiving, with these seven scrumptious recipes.

But before we roll up the sleeves of our robes and get our wands ready for all the cooking magic we have in store, we need to drop a quick Muggle studies lesson on you.

You don’t need to be an American or an Ilvermorny alum to know that turkeys are the “centerpiece” every November. Turkeys have become so ubiquitous with Thanksgiving that every year in the U.S., 46 million turkeys are killed for the holiday alone.

Turkeys are loving and worthy of kindness and respect!

Turkeys are energetic, curious, and clever. They’re very social and can forge lifelong friendships with other turkeys. They communicate with each other using dozens of different sounds and even have their own regional accents and dialects. Every turkey has their own unique voice that’s recognized by other turkeys in their community.

These exceptional birds don’t belong on anyone’s dinner plate.

We can choose to celebrate this Thanksgiving with compassion by forgoing eating turkeys and conjuring up a plant-based banquet for all our magical (and Muggle) friends and loved ones.

Or at the very least, a siriusly delicious treacle tart. Read on to see some positively delectible options!

Did you know there is an entirely vegan cookbook inspired by the wizarding world?

The Unofficial Harry Potter Vegan Cookbook offers over 75 recipes that are sure to leave you spellbound! The book was written by The Protego Foundation's very own Tylor Starr and Magical Food Deapartment's Imana Grashuis. The book is available now wherever books are sold!

1. Treacle Tart

We’re starting out the ThanksLiving feast with Harry’s favorite dessert, Treacle Tart!  Up your pie game and dazzle your magical and Muggle friends and relatives with this popular Hogwarts sweet. If you’ve never enjoyed golden syrup and the thick, sticky goodness of the chewy filling, you and your guests are in for a treat with this one.

2. Vegan Steak and Kidney Pie

If you’re looking for a very Potter entree, you can do no better than steak and kidney pie! The savory pie appears several times in the Harry Potter series—it’s even a specialty at the Leaky Cauldron! This ingenious, veganized version of the British favorite starts with a melt-in-your-mouth flaky pastry crust and features a warm and hearty portobello mushroom-based filling that’s perfect for the colder months.

3. Herb Roasted Potatoes

Potatoes appear in the wizarding world in many forms: mashed, boiled, baked, and roasted. Surprise, surprise, Americans love these starchy spuds as much as Brits! And while sweet potatoes have become a Thanksgiving staple, baby golden and fingerling potatoes ought to have some room at the table. A little olive oil, sea salt, dried rosemary, and thyme really make these little taters SO much more than just a side dish. Consider this recipe a jumping off point and experiment with your favorite herbs and spices!

4. Creamy Fall Soup in Acorn Squash Bowls

If Hagrid can grow shed-sized pumpkins in his garden on the Hogwarts grounds, he most definitely grows other squashes and gourds. Acorn squash is such an autumnal vegetable and makes the perfect vessel for thick and creamy soups. Think carrots, beets, and parsnips! This entree also has SUCH a beautiful aesthetic that you’ll easily impress your guests.

5. Lentil Shepherd’s Pie

Shepherd’s pie is a cozy comfort food dish that's a popular choice in both the UK and US. While shepherd’s pie doesn’t exactly scream Thanksgiving, a steaming, single-serve pot of this mashed potato-topped, lentil-and-braised-veggie-filled goodness will give you all the seasonal and holiday feels! Even better? No lambs or cows are harmed in the making of this hearty entree.

6. Fluffy Vegan Biscuits

Forget that sourdough quarantine baking trend. These fluffy, buttery biscuits are where it’s really at. Rolls, buns, or biscuits are one of the most popular Thanksgiving side dishes. Whether it's for gravy dunking or smearing with creamy (vegan) butter, you can’t do much better than a warm, just-out-of-the-oven biscuit at all of your autumn and winter gatherings. This recipe only requires five ingredients, and we don’t need to be a Legilimens to tell you that you probably already have all of them in your pantry and fridge. You’re welcome.

7.   Treacle Fudge

Sometimes, no humble pie or pumpkin pasties will do for afters. If you’re looking to conjure up a more charming confection, and are more than a little in love with golden syrup, this treacle fudge will do the trick. If treacle tart wasn’t enough to satisfy your Potterish sweet tooth (or impress your Muggle friends), this fudge might just elevate you to the Molly Weasley-level of cooking.

Bonus recipe: Vegan Turkey Gravy

Thick and savory turkey gravy is another traditional Thanksgiving feast staple. It’s also one of the easiest to veganize! The secret ingredient is poultry seasoning, which is a blend of the dried herbs rosemary, thyme, sage, and marjoram. You can bump up the “poultry” flavors for max turkey gravy authenticity by making this with Better Than Boullion’s No Chicken Base paste.

Turkey-Free is Easy!

Going turkey-free this holiday and whipping up this scrumptious Hogwarts-inspired feast is one of the most magical things you can do this ThanksLiving!

If you make any of these entrees, sides, or desserts, snap a photo and tag us on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter. We’d love to see what deliciousness you conjure up, and we might even feature it on our accounts!

We’d also like to take a moment to add that we’re well aware of the problematic history of Thanksgiving as a holiday, which is why instead of celebrating it, we’re celebrating ThanksLiving instead. We want to honor and show our love for animals in the Muggle world, magical creatures, and all of the extraordinary people working to improve their lives.
