10 Vegan Recipes from “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”

After spending two years within the magical walls of Hogwarts Castle, it’s understandable that leaving the wizarding world behind for the summer holidays in the Muggle world at the beginning of Prisoner of Azkaban was such a dismal thought to Harry Potter, especially since he had to spend months with his dreaded Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia and Dudley Dursley.

However, to Harry’s delight, in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, he didn’t end up spending much time with the Dursleys between the end of his second year and the start of his third.

After accidentally blowing up his Aunt Marge, Harry packed his belongings, found himself on the Knight Bus, and ended up at the Leaky Cauldron, spending the remainder of his summer basking in the glory of Diagon Alley.

Between his daily ice cream sundaes from Florean Fortescue's and discovering Butterbeer at The Three Broomsticks, we'd say that Harry had a pretty good year when it came to food!

As our own summer season comes to an end, we thought we’d put together some delicious recipes from Prisoner of Azkaban for you to enjoy!

Breakfast in the Wizarding World

For wizards and Muggles alike, eating breakfast is an important way to begin your day and get the nutrients and energy your body needs. Try beginning your morning with a bit of magic from these Potter-inspired breakfasts.

1. Tea and Crumpets

After Harry’s death-defying ride on the Knight Bus, he reached the Leaky Cauldron and was greeted by the Minister for Magic, Cornelius Fudge, who was keen to make sure he was safe and fed.

Although it’s nighttime when Fudge assures Harry that he won’t be punished for blowing up his Aunt and when Tom brings Harry a tray of tea and crumpets, which are also a great way to kick off your morning! Grab yourself a cuppa with a splash of plant-based milk and try your hand (or wand) at making this scrumptious vegan crumpet recipe.

You can eat them fresh out of the frying pan or pop them in the toaster. Don’t forget to spread a nice dollop of vegan butter over the crumpet, and if you’re feeling extra sweet, top it with a spoonful of jam or marmalade.

2. Porridge

If you’re looking for a healthy and easy breakfast, try a simple but tasty bowl of porridge.
Rich in fiber and packed full of essential vitamins, porridge contains a complex combination of carbohydrates and proteins, creating a slow-release energy source.

The protein from porridge oats helps improve the immune system and studies have found eating porridge can lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

Harry helps himself to a bowl of porridge before the dreaded Quidditch match that ends up getting interrupted by a swarm of Dementors.

If porridge can give you the energy needed for a Quidditch match like that, then it can surely prepare you for anything!

Porridge is so easy to make vegan, just substitute cow’s milk for a non-dairy plant-based milk. You can eat it on its own or topped with delicious extras.

We couldn’t decide which we liked the sound of the most, so here are 15 different vegan porridge recipes to get you energized for the day ahead.

3. Sausages and Tomatoes on Toast

If you’re looking for something a bit more substantial but don’t fancy something as filling as Mrs. Weasley’s Vegan British Fry-Up, why not try vegan sausages and tomatoes on toast? This is what Harry helped himself to on his first morning back at Hogwarts after miserably watching Malfoy do impressions of Harry “fainting” upon seeing the Dementors on the Hogwarts Express.

We found two delicious recipes you can cook up to enjoy this savory meal: meat-free sausages and beans on toast and vegan confit tomatoes with thyme and garlic on sourdough toast. You can serve them together to replicate Harry’s breakfast, or you could try them separately. Whatever strikes your fancy!

There are lots of different vegan sausage options, so grab your favorite and get cooking!

Dinner in the Great Hall

Whether you’re seeking a filling lunch meal or chasing down a deliciously warming recipe for your evening dinner, we’ve got you covered with these two recipes, perfect for the chillier days in Fall.

4. Stew

There’s nothing better than a warming stew on a chilly day, or in Harry’s case, after a morning of Divination and Transfiguration.

Modern Irish stew is usually made with beef or lamb, but earlier versions were made with mutton. Of course, our vegan stew will be containing nothing of the sort. We’ve got two options: a simple vegetable-only stew and one with a vegan meat substitute.

This easy vegetable stew contains only eight main ingredients: vegetable broth, white onion, garlic, carrots, red wine, potatoes, tomato sauce or puree, and Italian herb seasoning. Alternatively, if you’re wanting a bit more texture in your stew, you could go for this recipe, which uses TVP chunks (soya chunks) in the place of meat. The chunks can be browned to add more texture and tossed in herbs and flour for more flavour.

Don’t forget to enjoy this comforting dish with a nice, crusty loaf of bread on the side!

5. Roast Turkey Dinner with Roast Potatoes

After receiving his Firebolt from an anonymous gifter, Harry, Ron and Hermione make their way to the Great Hall for their Christmas lunch, digging into a classic Christmas meal of roast turkey and potatoes.

Of course, it isn’t Christmas yet, but who could say no to a lovely roast dinner on a chilly early autumn afternoon?

There are some great vegan turkey substitutes available, including homemade turkey substitutes or a pre-made “Turkey” from brands such as Quorn, Tofurkey, and Field Roast.

As for the potatoes, we’ve already geeked out over the many ways you can cook a potato. If you’re specifically looking for a deliciously crunchy bowl of roast potatoes, all you have to do is pour vegetable oil into a tray, let it heat up in the oven, add your peeled and chopped potatoes into the tray and pop them in the oven for around an hour (or until they’ve reached your desired level of crispiness!).

Don’t forget to top it all off with a thick ladle of vegan gravy.

Sweet Bites and Desserts

Once you’ve fully digested your main course, you might have room for dessert! We’ve chosen three mouthwatering sweet treats found in the Prisoner of Azkaban and made them deliciously vegan.

6. Lemon Meringue Pie

What’s better than a lemon meringue pie? A vegan lemon meringue pie!
Lemon meringue pies are known for their soft and light topping, tangy and tart lemon filling, and crisp pastry bottom.

Aunt Petunia bakes this dessert while Aunt Marge is visiting, and we think the sharp and tangy taste of the pie nicely reflects Petunia’s bitter and sour attitude and personality.

To make vegan meringue, you simply replace the eggs with aquafaba, also known as chickpea brine or chickpea water. Chickpea brine is the starchy liquid strained from canned chickpeas. It’s easily whipped to create the foam and the “stiff peaks” of trapped air known for giving structure to the meringue topping. It can also be used to give the pastry a fluffy texture.

According to School Vegan Night, there are three easy steps to using aquafaba:
  1. Use a stand mixer or electric whisk to get the airiest, fluffiest texture.
  2. Before draining the chickpeas, place the can in the fridge overnight. This will increase the viscosity, making it more likely to whip up nicely.
  3. Don’t use oil! Even the smallest amount will affect how much it whips. If you need to, use a slice of lemon to wipe the inside of your bowl to clean up any oil residue.

You could try making a classic lemon meringue pie, or if you prefer your pie to be portable and pocket-sized, whip up these mini vegan lemon meringue pies.

7. Ice Cream Sundae

One of Harry’s stand out memories from his summer in Diagon Alley was his unlimited amount of ice cream sundaes. While doing his homework outside Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour, Florean himself kindly gave Harry a free sundae every half an hour. Later in the book, during his extremely dull History of Magic exam, Harry recalls Florean’s choco nut sundae, and it’s got us dreaming about them too.

Harry was a fan of the choco nut flavor, while his best friends Hermione and Ron loved the strawberry and peanut butter flavors. What Foretscue flavour is your go-to? Salted caramel? Chocolate and raspberry? Earl Grey and Lavender? Or, something else entirely? Check out this guide for magical sundae inspiration!

It covers all the ingredients you need, from the ice cream base and the sauce to the whipped cream and toppings, so on the next hot day, you’ll be prepared to make your very own Florean Fortescue-level ice cream sundae.

8. Chocolate Pudding

Chocolate pudding is another dessert that Harry enjoyed during his last night at the Leaky Cauldron before departing for Hogwarts the next day.

If you’re not in the mood for an ice cream sundae, a deliciously rich and smooth chocolate pudding is a nice alternative.

This vegan chocolate pudding recipe uses just two ingredients, coconut milk and chocolate, and takes less than 20 minutes to prepare.

When shopping for vegan dark chocolate, be sure to check the ingredients; make sure it doesn’t contain milk, whey, or casein, and remember to look for chocolate that contains a high percentage of cacao (usually between 55 and 85%), because the higher the percentage, the more decadent the taste your chocolate pudding will have.

Some of our favorite vegan chocolates include Green & Black’s Organic Dark Chocolate, Alter Ego Classic Blackout, and No Whey chocolate.

9. Cauldron Cakes

If you’re looking for a small but delicious dessert, we have something just up your (Diagon) alley!

Cauldron Cakes have been part of Harry’s journey to Hogwarts since the very beginning  when he was introduced to them on the Hogwarts Express while travelling to Hogwarts for the very first time.

Cauldron Cakes are sold at Universal Orlando Resort and they come in a fancy silicone cauldron that can be reused to make your own cakes at home. You’ll find them in Honeydukes in Hogsmeade or in Sugar Plums Sweet Shop in Diagon Alley, and they contain a delicious chocolate cake topped with buttercream frosting that’s shaped like flames.

Unfortunately, the versions found at Universal Orlando aren’t vegan, but we’ve found the perfect alternate vegan recipe.

This recipe uses oat flour, almond flour, and flax eggs as a binder, producing fudgy chocolate muffins.  Once the muffins are cooled, you dip them into a pool of dark chocolate and let them set, creating the cauldron shell. You can also create a handle, feet, and spoon for the cauldron using left-over chocolate.

As for the creamy hot chocolate filling, all you need is some almond milk, cacao powder, coconut cream, maple syrup, and cornstarch.

(P.S. These muffins are gluten-free and naturally sweetened with coconut sugar!)

Fancy a Drink?

Be sure to stay hydrated with the classic wizarding world drink of Butterbeer, which can be drunk hot or cold to suit the weather or your accompanying meal.

10. Vegan Butterbeer

“Foaming mugs of hot Butterbeer” are introduced after Ron and Hermione’s first trip to Hogsmeade. Harry, unfortunately, has to miss out on the Three Broomsticks signature drink because Uncle Vernon never signed the permission slip!

This drink is such an iconic beverage in the wizarding world that even the Muggle world has caught on to the buttery brew!

London’s Warner Bros. Studio Tour - The Making of Harry Potter and New York’s Harry Potter Store, with its Butterbeer Bar, offer vegan options of this fan favorite.

Don’t worry if you won’t be visiting these locations anytime soon, because you can experience the wonder of Butterbeer in your own home with this delicious recipe! The great thing about this recipe is that it’s wonderfully simple to make, and if it’s a hot and sunny day, you can serve it cold, but if you’re all wrapped up and trying to keep warm, you can go for the hot version.

(P.S. In case you missed it, we’ve already covered some delicious recipes from the Sorcerer’s/Philosopher’s Stone and the Chamber of Secrets. And we know that chocolate features heavily in the Prisoner of Azkaban (thanks, Dementors), so we thought we’d point you toward our vegan Chocolate Frogs recipe, too!)
