"What are these?’ Harry asked Ron, holding up a pack of Chocolate Frogs. ‘They’re not really frogs, are they?’

He was starting to feel that nothing would surprise him.

‘No,’ said Ron, ‘But see what the card is, I’m missing Agrippa.’

‘What?’

‘Oh, of course you wouldn’t know -- Chocolate Frogs have cards inside them, you know, to collect-- Famous Witches and Wizards. I’ve got about five hundred, but I haven’t got Agrippa or Ptolemy.’

-- Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s/Sorcerer’s Stone

In the Wizarding World, Chocolate Frogs are one of the tastiest and most iconic treats. Although the original dark chocolate variety of Chocolate Frog is made from 70% of the finest Croakoa (a kind of magical cocoa) they come in several other flavors including white and milk chocolate.

However, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter parks in the United States haven’t yet expanded their chocolate horizons. The novelty Chocolate Frog candies sold in the theme parks and other Potterish stores are still loaded with milk.

But don’t despair! Here at The Protego Foundation, we worked some kitchen magic to show you how to make your very own vegan chocolate frogs!

With just two ingredients and two easy steps, this muggle-friendly recipe is a snap (or should we say “hop”?) to put together. We reckon even Hagrid couldn’t mess this one up! Aside from the ingredients, all you need is a functioning muggle freezer, a microwave, and a tray of chocolate frog molds.

And, if you want to take it a step further, we have a Wizard Cards and Chocolate Frog Box DIY below!

But, first, let’s make these dairy-free, frog-free, chocolate delights!

Ingredients
1 and ½ cups of Enjoy Life semi-sweet Mini Chocolate Chips*
1 and ½  teaspoons coconut oil
a few dabs of coconut oil to grease the molds
1 Tray of Frog Molds**

Steps
  1. Lightly grease the tray of frog molds with a few dabs of coconut oil OR spritz it with coconut oil cooking spray.
  2. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine 1 cup of the chocolate chips with 1 teaspoon of coconut oil.
  3. Microwave in 30-second intervals, carefully stirring with a fork until it’s fully melted and combined.
  4. Using a spoon or rubber spatula, dollop the melted chocolate into the greased frog molds.
  5. If you don’t have enough to chocolate to finish filling the molds, melt the remaining ½ cup of chocolate chips with the ½ teaspoon of coconut oil (using the same method in step 3) until you have enough melted chocolate to fill each frog entirely.
  6. Using a rubber spatula or the back of a spoon, make sure to smooth out the chocolate-filled frogs so they’re all even.
  7. Pop the tray of chocolate frogs into the freezer for two hours.
  8. Once they’re frozen, pop the frogs gently out of each mold—or put the mold up against a large cutting board or plate and flip it so the frogs pop out on their own.
  9. Let stand for a few minutes so they thaw from the freezer, and enjoy!
  10. Store remaining chocolate frogs in an air-tight container lined with wax paper or parchment paper in the freezer.
Notes:

*We prefer Enjoy Life because it’s a vegan-certified brand! It’s also allergy-friendly with strict standards, so if you have any nut, soy, or gluten allergies, you can eat this worry-free! Another vegan certified option is Hu Chocolate’s Hu Gems, which are also refined-sugar free and Paleo.

**Check your local arts and crafts store’s baking and soap-making aisles for a tray of plastic frog molds. Or, if you’re unable to make the trip, you could order a tray from Amazon Smile and select The Protego Foundation as your charity! That means some of the proceeds from everything you buy from Amazon—from that replacement Time-Turner you’ve had your eye on to a pack of Dobby-approved knit socks—will go directly to The Protego Foundation and help fund our current and upcoming campaigns! Sweet!

(Disclaimer: we don’t actively encourage our readers to order from Amazon due to their labor practices. However, we know that in certain circumstances and for certain items there is no other option. By using Amazon Smile, some good can come from your purchase.)

See!? You don’t need to have Helga Hufflepuff’s or Molly Weasley’s exceptional cooking prowess to conjure up a batch of these Hogwarts Express staples!

To make these Chocolate Frogs more authentic, you can head over to Muggle Magic’s Instructables page to download and print out free Honeydukes Chocolate Frog boxes and Wizard Cards! Your Muggle and magical friends will be totally mind-blown by just how detailed and film-accurate these are!

And if you’re feeling generous, you could take some of the galleons you’ve saved and put them towards adopting your own magical creature or animal companion in our newest fundraiser!
