At The Protego Foundation, we believe there’s no better way to celebrate our magical cooperation in the fight for creature rights than by veganizing an array of magical meals from Goblet of Fire!

Whether you’re competing as a Triwizard Champion, rocking and waltzing at The Yule Ball, or taking direct action for the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare, drink a gulp of Gillyweed and dive head first into these scrumptiously vegan recipes.

Bountiful Breakfasts

We are often told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and this is no exception for a Triwizard Champion. Before you launch into your fireplace to travel via the Floo Network, make sure you have a full stomach to start your day the wizarding way!

1. Aunt Petunia’s Broiled Grapefruit

An unfortunate start to our wizarding hero’s fourth adventure involves the tantrums and tears of Dudley and Aunt Petunia battling over “the young killer whale” and his diet.

Although The Protego Foundation does not approve of the fatphobic language used to describe Dudley (learn more on
Season 1, Episode 16 of ProtegoCast), we are a big fan of Aunt Petunia’s Broiled Grapefruit, which offers a fruity breakfast option.

With a swish and flick, you can easily customize your grapefruit to relish in all its sweetness. In this recipe, we Accio powdered ginger and coconut oil and sprinkle it with salt and sugar!

2. Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, and Orange Juice

As the Hogwarts students prepare for the arrival of their international counterparts from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang, Harry and Ron are left munching on scrambled eggs and bacon with Hermione lecturing on “A Highly Biased and Selective History of Hogwarts, Which Glosses Over the Nastier Aspects of the School” for the benefit of elf liberation.

In support of S.P.E.W, you can grab your nearest cauldron and veganize this British classic without the assistance of elves used in houses. This recipe involves conjuring your own rice-paper bacon!

Try this second recipe for tofu scramble that adds additional ingredients like mushrooms, tomatoes, and spinach.

If you’re fearful that you don’t have enough time (and you’re without a trusty Time-Turner!) – you can always head to your nearest store and find some plant-based alternatives to save you time.

For example, if you’re unsure about scrambled tofu, try Just Egg or Crack’d for an eggs-cellent replacement! And if you're a bit perplexed about making your own bacon, try easing yourself in with pre-prepared plant-based bacon from your local store.

P.S.: It’s getting darker and colder in the wizarding world, so if the above recipes don’t tickle your fancy, why don’t you Incendio a fire and cozy up with a bowl of porridge and treacle? We covered a variety of porridge recipes in our 10 Vegan Recipes from “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” article.

Fantastic Feasts and Where to Find Them

Embrace the culinary cultures and community of the wizarding world from the comfort of the Hogwarts kitchen. In addition to the delicious recipes below, Apparate over to our previous blog post to discover the Beauxbatons Bouillabaise recipe of Triwizard champion, Fleur Delacour.

3. Steak, Mashed Potatoes, and Yorkshire Pudding with Pumpkin Juice

Harry and his friends are welcomed into The Great Hall to start their academic year with a hearty portion of steak, Yorkshire pudding, and mashed potatoes. Why don’t you welcome your own friends to your dinner table with this veganized version?

The mashed potatoes and Yorkshire puddings can be easily transfigured to be creature-free with these simple recipes. But what about the steak?

The Muggle duo from BOSH! has made magic with their vegan steak recipe.

If you’re strapped for time, you may be able to find a pre-made vegan equivalent in your local store. We have experience with using the UK-based “
The VEGilantes Ste*k with spice crust.”

4. Hagrid’s Hearty Casserole

Originating from the French word for “sauce-pan,” the casserole is an extremely versatile dish with such variety that you will feel like you have been hit with a Confundus charm!

We are introduced to the beef casserole at Hagrid’s Hut, which is served to the trio as they ponder the Triwizard Tournament. This recipe includes a “cheezy” biscuit topping to add a contrasting texture – and also comes talon-free!

Switch out the beef for a plant-based chicken alternative if you want to feel like you’re feasting at The Yule Ball!

5.
Lamb Chops, Potatoes and Sprouts

After an unfortunate meeting with (exploding!) Blast-Ended Skrewts in Care of Magical Creatures, the trio traipses to the Great Hall to discuss their likelihood of surviving the class without injury over a lunch of lamb chops, potatoes, and sprouts.

The potatoes and sprouts can be easily veganized with a tap of your wand – just avoid dairy and use your favourite plant-based alternatives! Consider this recipe for creature-free sprouts and retrace your steps (with the help of Appare Vestigium) to our 10 Vegan Recipes from “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” article to track down our recipe for potatoes!

But what about the lamb? This recipe recreates an herby, plant-based alternative of the lamb chop using boiled pasta, smoked tofu, and beetroot juice! You can rest-assured with this recipe that no lamb was harmed in the making of your dinner.

If you are inspired to embrace international interpretations of plant-based lamb dishes, try this Greek-inspired vegan roasted lamb with roasted vegetables recipe.

6. Hungarian Horntail’s Goulash

The Christmas celebrations of international magical cooperation culminate with The Yule Ball at Hogwarts. At the feast, Harry devours a goulash before escorting Parvati Patil onto the dance floor for the Triwizard Champions’ dance.

Hailing from the land of the Hungarian Horntail, why not try this compassionate twist on a traditional goulash?

Filled to the brim with wholesome vegetables and a hearty handful of paprika, this straightforward recipe is quite easy to brew in your own cauldron.

This plant-based version is full of flavor and is a perfect way to warm your stomach on a cold, broody evening.

Triwizard Treats

We don’t need to slip a drop of Veritaserum into your morning pumpkin juice for you to admit that the sweet treats featured in Goblet of Fire sound simply scrumptious.

7. The Twins’ Ton-Tongue Toffee

You can’t expect a Floo Powder fireplace mishap in the Dursley’s living room to be the only mischievous misunderstanding that happens during the trip to rescue Harry from the Dursleys, especially with the founders of Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes along for the ride!

Treat (or trick) your own friends with creature-free Ton-Tongue Toffees using this recipe. Toffees are traditionally made with dairy products, such as cow’s milk and butter, but there are simple switches to be found for those of us who can easily access a grocery store.

DISCLAIMER: This recipe will not cause any form of engorgement to the tongue of a friend or a foe, even if their name is Dudley Dursley!

8. The Fat Lady’s Banana Fritters

In a continued effort to decipher the golden egg’s clue for the second task, Harry sneaks out of the Gryffindor common room to take a dip in the prefect’s bathroom (thanks to a tip from fellow Hogwarts Champion, Cedric Diggory!). Harry evades the gaze of The Fat Lady by exiting under the invisibility cloak as Ron enters the portrait hole.

The password to get past The Fat Lady? Banana fritters!

Try this recipe to conjure your own creation! Combine your ingredients (including flour, sugar, baking powder, and plant-based milk) to create a light and crispy batter for your cut-up banana.  Serve with maple syrup and sesame seeds to unlock a particularly sweet treat!

9. Mrs. Weasley’s Strawberry Ice Cream

After living on a diet of stale cakes at Privet Drive, Harry returns to The Burrow following the twins’ Ton-Tongue Toffee escapade and is greeted by the Weasleys and Hermione.

Mrs. Weasley proves (as always!) that she is the most welcoming host and creates an array of homemade delights for Harry to enjoy, including strawberry ice cream.

This recipe is easy to recreate. All you need are three ingredients and a standard Muggle blender or food processor. Tap your wand to perform the Glacius charm and you will have a frozen dessert suitable for a Triwizard Champion!

10. Canary Creams

Fred and George continue their Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes enterprise by surprising their fellow Gryffindors with their Canary Creams.

Inspired by the
custard cream, an English biscuit “sandwich” with a creamy custard or vanilla filling, the twins’ trickster treats temporarily transfigure those who ingest them into large canaries, including our beloved aspiring Herbologist, Neville Longbottom.

This vegan custard cream recipe uses vegan butter, custard powder (which is accidentally vegan!), flour, and sugar to create a buttery biscuit base and smooth icing center.

If you’re feeling particularly creative, Accio a bird-shaped cookie cutter to make these treats even more magical!

P.S.: Dust off your Remembrall and consider other sweet treats that we’ve encountered in previous books. Whether it’s Hagrid’s Homemade Rock Cakes or a Treacle Tart from Sorcerer’s Stone or Comforting Cauldron Cocoa from Chamber of Secrets, you’re sure to have a limitless supply of festive fare to conjure up during the months of the Triwizard Tournament!

Here is our handy chart for the most common ingredients in need of replacing in non-vegan recipes:
